Storm Damage: What you can’t see

The level of damage a storm can cause is a rather large scale.  It could be minor basement flooding and broken windows all the way up to a roof being ripped off.   Even the most minor damage can cause stress in the life of the average hardworking homeowner.   We would like talk about how our services can remove the burden of having to manage a situation that already has your time stretched too thin.  When faced with storm damage the following questions present themselves:

  • How bad is it?
  • How am I going to pay for this?
  • Can/should I fix it myself?
  • Who should I trust to fix it?
  • How long will this take?

Lets take a moment to consider those questions in detail.

What should I do?

Often, in the case of catastrophic damage this question answers itself, for example “There is a giant hole in my roof where the tree fell down on it.” Chances are in that example your first reaction will be to call a company to come and fix it and your insurance provider.  Other times however,  the extent of the damage caused by storms can be deceiving.  Perhaps your basement has encountered some  minor flooding.  There is a carpet on the floor and you can see that the dry wall has soaked up some of the water.  Maybe your think to yourself “this isn’t that serious I know a guy that knows a guy that can get this done cheap” and they come in they dry the basement out replace the carpet and replace the affected water damaged walls.

But the real question to ask first is “how did the water get here in the first place?”  If the water came in through the foundation drain it could have been a simple case of an overtaxed sewer system, but what if it came through a crack in your foundation and the person you hired isn’t a licensed contractor?  Did he know to check the source of the flooding?  The extent of non visible water damage?  Did they dry out the framing properly?  If the answer is no to any of the previous questions there is a good chance there will be standing water in places you can’t see and given enough time it will cause rot and potentially even worse, mold.  If mold takes hold you now have a situation that most would consider worse than flooding.   It is critical to hire the right person/company when dealing with any storm damage as often is the case there is always more to the situation than what you can see.  Having the repairs done wrong can be just as devastating as the storm that cause the damage in the first place.

Finally, there is another issue that could could “take you by storm” in the figurative sense.  The person you hired isn’t properly licensed and your submit your claim to your insurance company and they deny your claim because you used a service provider not approved by the terms of the contract.  You are now stuck paying out of pocket for the repairs and any future damage the insurance company can prove was caused by the improper repairs.
